What Clothes NOT to Put in a Washing Machine
Have you ever been guilty of shoving anything and everything into your washing machine in the hopes of getting clean, fresh laundry? You may have found that this isn’t always the most successful practice. As a repair expert on washing machines, I want to help you find out what items are not suitable for washing machines and why.
Delicate Fabrics
Some fabrics can be too delicate for a conventional spin cycle. These fabrics may include delicates such as silk, lace, or rayon which could easily become damaged or torn when placed in a washing machine. If you opt to wash these garments, it’s best to use either a handwash cycle with cold water or to take it to the dry cleaner instead.
Clothes with Buttons and Zips
Modern washers feature various settings and cycle types but they can still cause damage to clothes with buttons and zips attached. This is because all of these items can get caught up in the rotating drum and cause tears or breakages upon rapid spinning motions within the appliance. It’s safer to remove these items before washing or handwash them separately if possible.
Items That Can Fade Easily
Brightly colored clothing items like hoodies, t-shirts, jeans etc tend to fade over time no matter how much care you put into them but putting certain garments through a wash may increase this risk considerably. Avoid colors running by opting for cold water washes only and avoid using too much detergent that could add more stress on the material dye used in manufacture.
Shoes and Purses
Washing shoes or purses may seem like an easy way of restoring their original condition but this practice should be avoided at all costs as materials within these items will likely be unnatural fibers created from plastics that may melt when subjected to high temperatures used in some laundry cycles. Additionally, any dirt within shoes cannot often be removed with a single wash only resulting in further damage over successive laundering processes so it’s better off leaving them well alone.
Heavy Items made from Fabric
Heavy items such as towels or bedding involve lots of fabric strands that could easily become tangled during operation due to their weight leading to further wear and tear over time if washed regularly – making them unsuitable for regular use in a washer/dryer unit combo! As an alternative option – why not try air drying instead? This will help retain fabric quality while still providing fresh smelling garments free from dampness when finished.
Damage caused by improper use of your washing machine can cost you time, money, and effort trying to fix it back up again – so why chance it? It’s always best practice before attempting any laundry tasks – no matter how convenient – ensuring the item is suitable for the task ahead will save everyone from future heartache should something go wrong.
