Repair or Replace: Microwave Edition
The microwave is a super useful appliance when it comes to pulling together a quick meal or snack. But when your microwave is malfunctioning, you may wonder if this small appliance is worth repairing, or if you would save money in the long run by replacing it altogether.
At Diamond Appliance, we help people across the St. Louis region with expert microwave repair services and advice. We have truly seen it all when it comes to microwaves. Read on for our guide to understanding common microwave issues, and whether it makes more financial sense to repair your microwave or start shopping for a new model.
Troubleshooting common microwave problems
Our Diamond microwave repair experts report the following as the most common microwave issues:
- Microwave is not heating. Like any appliance, microwaves experience normal wear and tear over time, and the heating component is not immune. Eventually, the heating component may burn out completely, warranting a part replacement.
- Microwave plate is not spinning. The most likely cause of a microwave plate not spinning is a malfunctioning motor beneath the plate. The issue could also be with the switchboard. An experienced repairman can fix both of these issues.
- Microwave stops in the middle of heating. The likely issue here is a bad wiring connection which, when heated up, trips a fuse in the switchboard and cuts power to the microwave. Another potential cause of this problem is not enough ventilation around the microwave which can cause the machine to overheat and lose power.
- Microwave is sparking. One of the scarier issues that can happen with a microwave is sparks while the appliance is running. First, make sure you are not heating metal, including aluminum foil, as this will cause sparks. Otherwise, the issue may be peeling paint on the inside of the microwave, which can cause the “micro waves” to get absorbed by the metal on the appliance. Another issue could be wear and tear on the microwave’s rack support.
- The light is out in the microwave. This could happen for one of three reasons: the microwaves light bulb is out, a socket is malfunctioning, or something is wrong with the wiring. Another possible issue could be with the switchboard not sending power to the light.
- The touchpad is not working. The touchpad on a microwave may become less sensitive over time due to normal wear and tear. Harsh chemicals or use of glass cleaner on a touchpad could also cause it to short out.
Should you repair or replace your malfunctioning microwave?
An experienced appliance repair person can address all of the issues above. We can also advise you on whether it is worth it to repair or replace your microwave. A newer microwave that experiences these issues is likely worth replacing, as it likely has many good years left in it. If the microwave is a pricier model (some can cost hundreds of dollars), you may also consider paying for repair rather than replacing the unit. Microwaves with special features as well as built-in microwaves are also often worth repairing as replacement can be expensive due to the need for custom sizing and expert installation.
If your microwave is older than 8-10 years and was on the cheaper side when you bought it (say, under $100), it probably makes more financial sense to replace it.
