Here are some of our favorite space-saving refrigerator hacks:

Use metal cooling racks to create additional shelf space. Simply place a cooling rack on top of a refrigerator shelf to store an additional layer of food dishes. This hack is especially handy when cooking for a crowd or meal prepping for the week.

Use clear baskets or bins to group similar items together. This will help you see what you have and prevent food from getting lost in the back of the fridge. And don’t forget to label your containers so everyone in the family knows what goes where!

Store the oldest food at the front and newer food towards the back so you know what to eat first. This can help you prevent food waste and save money on your grocery bill. Alternatively, you can dedicate a clear plastic bin to food that is near its expiration date and place it near the front of the fridge.

Store condiment bottles upside down in a recycled egg carton. This will allow you to store more bottles on a single shelf and ensure they are easy to use when you’re ready to sauce up your burger!

Use chip clips or binder clips to hang bags of cheese and steamer veggies from a wire shelf. This will maximize the vertical space in your refrigerator and keep those pesky bags from falling over.

Store frequently used items at eye level. This will save you time and energy when you’re looking for something in the fridge.

Place a magnetic strip on the side of the fridge to store knives, scissors, and other metal utensils. You can also place command hooks or magnetic clips on your fridge to maximize the storage on every surface!

But wait, there’s more! Here are some fun hacks for the other large appliances in your kitchen:

Microwave

  • Use your microwave to dry herbs; microwaves work by heating up the moisture in food. If left long enough, the moisture will evaporate. Use this to your advantage to dry out your basil, parsley, and thyme for use in a variety of dishes.
  • Cook multiple potatoes at once by placing them on a rotating glass plate.
  • Make quick and easy single servings of mac and cheese, oatmeal, or soup by using a coffee mug.

Dishwasher

  • Preheat your dishwasher for tougher stains by running it on the hottest cycle without any dishes for two minutes. Then add your dirty dishes and run the cycle as normal.
  • Place a silicone cupcake liner upside down in each compartment of your silverware tray to keep smaller items (like chopsticks) from falling through the cracks.
  • Soak greasy pots and pans in hot soapy water before washing them in the dishwasher to prevent them from re-soiling dishes.
  • To rid a dishwasher of unpleasant odors, place a bowl of vinegar on the top shelf of the dishwasher and run a cycle. This will help clear out gunk and leave your dishwasher smelling fresh. Add a couple of slices of lemon for a citrus scent.
  • Use your dishwasher to wash non-food items like sneakers, throw pillows, plastic toys, and baseball caps.

Freezer

  • Get more use out of ice cube trays by freezing herbs, broth, and other liquids.
  • Make single servings of smoothies or frozen yogurt ahead of time by pouring them into muffin tins. Once frozen, pop them out and store them in a freezer bag.
  • Got gum on your shoe? Pop them in the freezer for up to 8 hours, then easily (and carefully) chip the gum off with a butter knife.
